Fair Contestant -- Kay Wood

Friday, July 13, 2012

Kay Wood is the 19-year-old daughter of John and Peggy Wood of Greencastle. She has three older siblings, Dee Wood, 22, David Wood, 34, and Jennifer Girton, 37.

The 2011 Greencastle High School graduate now studies kinesiology at DePauw University.

While attending GHS, Wood was a member of National Technical Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Key Club, Latin Club, Pep Club, G Club, band, choir, SADD, track and field, cheerleading, golf, diving, football and softball.

At DePauw, she is active in cheerleading, as a Tiger Ambassador and the Spring Spectacle of Shakespeare at DePauw. She is also a member of Delta Gamma fraternity, where she serves as director of public relations.

After graduating from DePauw with a degree in kinesiology-sports medicine, Wood plans to continue on to medical school.

Wood said she entered the contest because she has always looked up the queen and her peers since starting 4-H.

She describes herself as genuine, kind-hearted and loyal with a bubbly personality and warm smile. Her hobbies include knitting, painting and reading.

The advice Kay would give to younger people is not to let anyone change who they are.

"Always be yourself and follow your dreams," Wood said. "And never underestimate the power of a smile. It could change someone's life forever."

Wood said having two knee surgeries shaped her life significantly, showing her no matter how many bumps in the road there are, her dreams can still come true.

She most admires her dad, who she describes as the strongest, smartest person she knows. "He always has an answer and he is a great dad."
