Fairgrounds goes smoke free

Saturday, July 21, 2012

The Putnam County Fair Board has announced a smoking ban at the fairgrounds.

In light of this summer's drought conditions, smoking will be prohibited on the grounds during the Putnam County Fair.

This applies to all areas of the fairgrounds, inside and outside, including remote parking areas.

"We have taken every protective measure possible, including removing all grass possible from the parking lot and having several vehicles available with water tanks and sprayers to douse any fires started on the grounds," Fair Board President Dale Jessup said.

The Fair Board is taking it one step further, though, asking the public to do its part in preventing any possible disaster at the fair.

"We are asking the public's cooperation in not smoking in and around the fairgrounds during these drought conditions," Jessup said.

  • I witnessed at least three people smoking on the fairgrounds on Saturday very close to the the cattle barn.

  • Doesn't it make common sense to prohibit smoking at the fairgrounds permanently rather than on just this special situation?

Smoking is a disgusting and harmful activity to the user and to anyone else around them, especially children who attend the fair.
