Come join us at the fair

Monday, July 23, 2012
Debby Jordan (left) will be providing a style show of fashions from the past during the morning session of the 2012 Ladies Day program on Wednesday, July 25.

As I write this week's column, my fingers are crossed that the remainder of fair week will be warm and summery, but not as dry and HOT as what we experienced most of June and July leading up to the fair.

For those who prepare and participate in the county fair, much of the work is over by the time the fair actually begins, but there is still a lot to see and do throughout the week and we hope you will come and join us.

We like to believe there is something for everyone at the fair, whether you like seeing the animals, riding the rides, eating the food or simply visiting and seeing friends and neighbors along with lots of folks who've moved away but come 'Home' for the fair.

You can check the pre-fair edition of the Banner, or the Fair Association website -- www.putcofair.org/ -- for listings of specific days and times for the many 4-H shows, competitions and other activities. I'd like to remind you here of the major events taking place in the (cool and comfortable) Adult Open Class Exhibit Hall for the remainder of the week.

First of all at 7 p.m. tonight, Monday, July 23 is your opportunity to watch the Open Judging of over 40 beautiful quilts as well as the entries in the 2012 Quilt Block Contest. Experienced judge Donna Jo Copeland will be on hand to share her knowledge and perspective on all types of quilting techniques. This is an opportunity to learn about the judging process and to see and hear what the judge is thinking and considering when making their selections for placings.

Tuesday evening, July 24 at 7 p.m. you are invited to bring something that is old and/or obsolete. And no we are not talking about any spouses, as more than one person has suggested, but merely something that is over 50 years old or something that is no longer used as it was in the past. Examples might be a slide rule, a butter churn, etc.

Our panel of prominent fair personalities (President Dale Jessop, Edith Fry, Jeff Rich and Judy Parker) will do their best to identify and explain what the item is and what it was used for. So please come and bring an item to help stump the panel and to make the event more fun.

Wednesday, July 25 is the annual Ladies Day program themed "What's in Grandma' Attic". Everyone is welcome to this program which will include music, refreshments, and an impressive show of Fashions from the Past. The program will conclude with the 7th annual Purse Auction.

Thursday, July 26 is the 30th annual Bakers' Best Contest, sponsored by the Greencastle Kroger Store and your chance to win over $100 in gift certificates as well as a one-of-a-kind, batter bowl, rolling pin and aprons which will go to the makers of the top place, pies, cakes, breads or cookies.

Entries for the contest, which features apples this year, are due between 9-11 a.m. Open judging of the baked goods will begin at approximately 12:30 p.m. with the contest awards and auction taking place at 7 p.m.

Friday, July 27 at 7 p.m. is when the awards for all of the Adult Open Class champions and reserve champions along with other special awards will be presented and group photos of the winners will be taken.

Of course the items listed above are just a few of the many events and activities that will continue to take place at the Putnam County fair this week. So cross your fingers and join us in hoping for comfortable weather and also come and join us for a day or evening of fun and fellowship at the county fair.

Visit our website at www.extension.purdue.edu/putnam or you can contact the local Purdue Extension Office by calling 653-8411 for more information regarding this week's column topic or to RSVP for upcoming events. It is always best to call first to assure items are ready when you arrive and to RSVP for programs. While many publications are free, some do have a fee. All times listed are Eastern Time.
