Construction Begins

Wednesday, August 1, 2012

Frustrated by the U.S. 231 detour on Greencastle's south side? Just imagine your car going through this torn up section of Bloomington and Anderson streets. The closure of the highway began on Monday, with workers from Rieth-Riley Construction Co. Inc. excavating large portions of the street. The closure is scheduled for two months, as Anderson Street is completely reconstructed to make an official entrance to DePauw University. The official U.S. 231 detour follows U.S. 231 northbound to Veterans Memorial Highway westbound to South Jackson Street northbound and back to U.S. 231. Traffic traveling in the opposite direction will use the same detour in reverse.

I don't mind the added traffic on S. Jackson Street. It is amazing how many "semi" trucks obey the posted speed limit...now, if only passenger vehicles & pick-up trucks would do the same.

It will be a safe 2 months without large trucks making the turns at Bloomington & Washington AND Jackson & Washington. The Drivers continue their to make their turn when there is NO ROOM...don't they know the length of their rigs...can't they judge distance...why don't they use their heads and eyes...after all this is their livelihood.

Just learned with the new pavement at the intersection of Bloomington and Anderson streets that in the winter after a snow the state highway trucks have been ordered to lift their snow blades so that the newly paved intersection won't be torn up. Isn't this just great! A slick intersection!

Jackson & Washington is a horrible intersection for semis, there isn't enough room for them to turn easily there. Don't blame them, blame the city for not modifying either their route or modifying the intersection.
