1.2 inches of rain Thur. puts Aug. above average

Saturday, August 18, 2012

The thunderstorm that swept through Putnam County Thursday afternoon and evening may not have produced enough rainfall to save many crops but it did push August past its precipitation average.

Greencastle received 1.2 inches of rain Thursday, according to Diana Foust, who logs daily rainfall totals locally.

That 1.2 inches means the August total rainfall through Friday (Aug. 17) is a robust 4.51 inches. A typical August in Central Indiana experiences 3.13 inches of rain.

Locally, the August rainfall total to date Is more than the months of May (2.70), June (0.34) and July (0.28) combined.

The Indianapolis area, meanwhile, had logged 4.98 inches of August rain through Friday.

While 1.2 inches fell officially in Greencastle on Thursday, northern Putnam County, particularly the Bainbridge area, easily received more than that. However, no local observer provides totals for that area of the county.
