Sheriff's Department

On Wednesday, Aug. 22 at 6:46 p.m. a two-vehicle wreck in northern Putnam County injured four people

Rex Bartelt, 51, Russellville, was eastbound on State Road 236 stopped at the U.S. 231 intersection in a 1984 Dodge Ram. Bartelt said he stopped and looked both directions, seeing no approaching vehicles.

As Bartelt pulled into the intersection to go north, out of the corner of his eye he noticed the 1998 Nissan Altima driven northbound by Rebecca J. Ivers, 20, Greencastle. Bartelt said he had not originally seen the vehicle due to a hill crest.

Both drivers tried to avoid the accident, but could not. Bartelt's truck came to rest in a field just east of the intersection facing west. Ivers' vehicle came to rest on the northbound shoulder facing north.

A passenger in Bartelt's vehicle, 77-year-old Alice Plemons, Russellville, complained of pain over her entire body. Ivers and three of her passengers, Shannon M. Ivers, 47; Tori L. Ivers, 18; and Abigail J. Branson, 16; all of Greencastle, all complained of fully body pain.

PMH Ambulance and the Roachdale Fire Department treated the injured, with PMH transporting them to the hospital.

Bartelt was suspended for driving with a suspended license.

Damage $5,001-$10,000.
