GMS cross country runners compete at State Preview meet in Terre Haute

TERRE HAUTE -- The Greencastle Middle School cross country teams competed at the State Preview meet this past Saturday. The girls' placed second, while the boys' finished seventh on the day.

Emma Wilson placed first for the girls with a time of 12:14, while Seelye Stoffregen was third in a time of 12:33. Katie Haynes also finished in the top 10, placing seventh with a time of 12:51.

Sydney Lewis was 26th in a time of 14:23, with Gretchen Weliever placing 29th with a time of 15:07. Faith Anderson was 38th in 16:52 and Abigail King was 40th in 17:54.

For the boys', Ben Gellman paced the squad with a sixth place finish in a time of 11:28. Clayton Wilson was eight with a time of 11:32. Jacob Crawley placed 28th with a time of 12:19, while Cameron Lewis was 31st in a time of 12:37.

Jackson Kendall was 34th overall with a time of 12:57, with Harrison McCarty finishing 36th in a time of 13:10 and Tylan Jones finished 37th in a time of 13:22.

"I was very happy with the way both teams raced on Saturday," head coach Ivonne Martinez said. "Running in the rain did not slow them down at all. In fact, we had a couple PRs in the rain and also two more boys qualify for state.

"The girls really stepped it up even though, Gracie Smith, our fourth runner, was unable to race. I think that having three runners in the top 25 for the girls was a great accomplishment. This is definitely paving the road for the State meet."

Martinez said the boys had a good day as well and now knows how hard they must race each time out to accomplish its goals.
