Voluntary water conservation lifted in Greencastle

Friday, September 14, 2012

One of the wettest Augusts on record has made the driest June and July in Central Indiana a thing of the past.

The rain has now also made voluntary water conservation in the city a thing of the past.

At Tuesday's Greencastle City Council meeting, Mayor Sue Murray officially announced the lifting of the city's request that residents voluntarily restrict their water use.

Utilities Superintendent Richard Hedge informed the mayor that water levels in the city well have steadily climbed for almost two months and are up nearly 1.5 feet since July 18.

Murray originally issued the Declaration of Local Water Conservation Order on July 23, and the council has extended the order three times since.

"We still want to remind people that we are down from where we were in May," Mayor Murray said.

However, the steady climb has officials encouraged and confident the city and its residents can move forward responsibly.
