Tiger Cubs trump Eagles in dual swim meet

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

After facing North Putnam and Tri-West Monday night, South Putnam's swim squads made a quick turnaround Tuesday night to host Greencastle.

The aquatic Tiger Cubs won both events, with the girls taking a 119-61 win and the boys walking away 101-79 victors in the opening meet for both boys' teams.

Kaelynn Cox picked up two wins for the visitors in the 50 and 100 free races, while Mallary Meyer added two more wins in the 100 fly and backstroke.

Corrie Romer won the 200 free while Rosio Gomez won the 200 IM, Libby Brush won the 500 free and Amelia Smith won the 100 breaststroke.

In addition, Brush, Smith, Rachel Custis and Emily Wheeler took the 200 medley relay while Brush, Romer, Wheeler and Custis won the 400 free relay.

South Putnam won two events with Maddison Plunkett winning the diving event and the team of Lyndsie Beasley, Megan Arnold, Katie McHugh and Katie Hansel won the 200 free relay.

Greencastle's boys, ranked within the top 30 teams in the state in the preseason polls, won seven events.

Nathan Gardner won the 500 free and 100 backstroke, Nash Firebaugh claimed the 100 free and 200 IM, while Taylor Secrest capture the 100 breaststroke and Elijah Brattain won the 100 fly.

The team of Firebaugh, Gardner, Brattain and Isaac Harms won the 400 free relay.

South Putnam's Taylor Arnold won the 50 free, Ben Albright took first in the 200 free and Tyler Neumann won the diving event.

The team of Arnold, Zeke Evens, Wyatt Nees and Matt Lund won the 200 medley relay, while Albright, Nees, Arnold and Zane Crosby won the 200 free relay.

Greencastle head coach Kent Menzel said that the meet was more of the true "first" meet for the squad.

"I thought it went very well. I've seen a lot of talent develop from last year to this year. Zach and Taylor Secrest, Jason Ummel and Alex Briones all looked very good tonight and showed a nice, continuous development from last season to this season," Menzel said.

"Our lone ninth grader, Jacob Kessler, swam very, very well tonight and is an outstanding addition to the team. We saw great stuff from Nash (Firebaugh), Nathan (Gardner), Isaac Harms and Elijah Brattain, our more experienced swimmers.

"It's also nice to have senior leadership through Alex Asbell. Everybody swam well and have been doing well in the workouts, too," Menzel added.

Though the girls already swam against Danville, Menzel said it was good to see what the full squad could accomplish.

"The girls' went against Danville last week at half strength, with many of them in the high school musical, so tonight was really their first chance to all swim together," Menzel said.

"I thought they were outstanding. I thought the relay teams meshed very well. Our freshmen, Corrie Romer, Mallary Meyer, Amelia Smith and Libby Brush all swam very well.

"There was also great work from our juniors. Rachel Custis, Emily Wheeler and Rosio Gomez all had very good meets," Menzel added.

"They were in different events tonight to help develop them as athletes and they rose to the challenge and had good swims in events they're not used to.

"The relays were fast, they meshed well for both boys and girls and I think there are some very good things going on."

Menzel said the squad would continue working during the break to prepare for Terre Haute South.

"That'll be a great challenge for us as a team," Menzel said. "I think we're up to it, to do some great swimming against a great team from Terre Haute and hopefully lay down some very fast times."

South Putnam head coach Matthew Edwards echoed Menzel's words for the effort of the squad.

"It went great. We were fortunate enough to have a meet yesterday against Tri-West to analyze and anticipate anything that we needed to remind the teams of," Edwards said.

"We went over some legal terms and items, discussed technique and looked at strategy and pacing. It helped a lot today and they pulled off some great stuff. They gave it all they had.

"For the guys, this was a nice meet. We were down some guys tonight so several swimmers swam events that they aren't as comfortable with," Edwards added.

"Everyone did great. They took their events in stride. It was a good basis for evaluation and we know what we can do in the future."

South Putnam faces Tri-West for the second time in a week next Tuesday and, with Indianapolis Ritter also competing, it is a meet that should help the Eagles get used to road travels.

"It'll be fun. It was a really close meet for the girls last night. Tri-West is a great team and they have a lot of talent," Edwards said.

"But it was such a close meet that hopefully we can work on some things, take care of business and come back on Tuesday and try to push on towards a win."
