Frost brought down its share of leaves early this season in the Greencastle area.
With an early frost and an earlier-than-usual Thanksgiving holiday this year, Greencastle Department of Public Works has been conducting the annual leaf battle for nearly a month now.

And time has come for leaf pick-up in Greencastle to come to an end. The last day that the city leaf vacuums will make their rounds for 2012 will be Friday, Nov. 30.

Public Works Director Brad Phillips and his department officially started city leaf-collection efforts on Oct. 29 and actually sent out crews earlier since large piles of leaves were already curbside in some areas.

With Thanksgiving occurring early this year (Nov. 22), the hope was that Greencastle residents would take advantage of the holiday weekend to rake leaves and ready them for the final round of the leaf vacuums that ends on Friday.

Simple rules of Greencastle leaf pick-up include:

-- Collection schedule follows city trash routes as closely as possible. So if your trash is picked up on Mondays, the leaf vac will probably get your leaves that day too.

-- No bags are to ever be used. Leaves should be raked into the area between the sidewalk and curb or to the edge of the yard if there is no curb (never into the street where they can wash into the storm sewers).

-- Do not mix in any limbs or trash with leaves (tree limbs or trash can damage equipment and put the leaf vac out of commission).

-- Also, it should be noted that burning leaves is not permissible in the City of Greencastle.
