Cougars get trounced by Tri-West

Wednesday, December 5, 2012

ROACHDALE -- North Putnam became the third Putnam County squad to fall to Tri-West this season, losing Tuesday night 81-32.

The mixture of zones, presses and traps from the visitors was largely ineffective in the opening quarter as the Cougars kept the Bruins in striking distance at 13-7.

But Tri-West continued to mix up the defensive schemes and the resulting 27-point second quarter put the hosts in a tough position.

The Cougars again made the Bruins work hard in the third quarter as North Putnam had their best offensive period of the game.

As the fourth quarter began and progressed, both benches began to empty out as Tri-West recorded their sixth win of the season and condemned the Cougars to their seventh loss.

Sam Lucas led North Putnam with 17 points on the night, with Madi Asbell contributing six points and Morgan Smith adding three.

North Putnam head coach Curtis Lawrence commended his side for continuing to press on during the contest.

"We hustled and played hard for 32 minutes and coach [Brad] Acton was very complimentary after the game of the effort we showed tonight," Lawrence said.

Lawrence added that the game plan will not change much for North Vermillion next week.

"The good news is, the way we prepped for Tri-West tonight will be similar to what we do for North Vermillion," Lawrence said. "There's not a lot of change there."

"Looking at the score, you might think there needs to be some sort of change, but we need to go into that game with the same philosophies as tonight and (when we ) open up (West Central Conference) play against Cascade next Friday."
