ROACHDALE -- The North Putnam wrestling team came up just short against Monrovia on Saturday, but with a full lineup returning, the crew hoped for better luck.

The Bulldogs were again able to put the slip on the Cougars, handing NPHS a loss at the dual meet Wednesday, 34-27.

"Improvement is the word," NPHS coach Bucky Kramer said. "The kids that wrestled and lost on Saturday took it further tonight and improved. We've got to continue to work through situations."

The match started at 106, where NPHS freshman Trae Straziscar came out more aggressive than he showed Saturday.

He shot at the legs of his opponent, working hard to get the match on the ground, but never got position.

Straziscar fought through the first round and tried his same aggressive plan in the second.

His attack was again slipped and Straziscar was taken down then pinned with 35 seconds remaining in round two, giving the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead.

Jordan Sarr was the first Cougar to take down his Bulldog opponent. The 132-pounder quickly took down his opponent and grabbed a pin just 20 seconds into his match.

"We've got to get credit to Jordan for getting the win for us," Kramer said. "Tonight we lost a couple that we could have won."

Caleb Winings followed with another win, this time by decision in the 138 pound class.

Devon Attkisson had the most intense match of the night.

Attkisson (145) nearly had his opponent finished less than a minute into the first round, jumping out to a 5-0 lead.

Monrovia's Lane Cooper bounced back, reversing his position.

Attkisson began the second round in defensive starting position, nearly escaping early, then getting taken back down. Cooper had two near falls in the round, but Attkisson fended them off.

The third round began with Attkisson in the offensive position, but seemed exhausted as Cooper quickly reversed and added a near fall just seconds in.

Attkisson returned the favor, reversing position back, but Cooper retook control after another reversal and three-point near fall.

Freshman Trevor Bingman also battled for three rounds.

Madi Mazur (113), Austin Buchanan (220) and Eric Davis (285) each took wins by forfeit.

The Cougars return to action Saturday when they host the Kenny Kerns Invitational at 9 a.m.
