Tiger Cubs fight to big win on senior night against N. Vermillion

Thursday, December 6, 2012

Greencastle's wrestling squad celebrated senior night a mere three meets into the season by handing North Vermillion a heavy 60-12 defeat.

Senior Hunter Smith led off the evening at 182 pounds but was the only senior not to score a win on the evening as he fell in a 9-5 decision loss to Dakota Uplinger.

That was one of only three wins for the Falcons all night as Nate Tesmer got the Tiger Cubs on the board at 195 pounds with a 5-1 decision win.

"Our senior class this year is a tight-knit group, they work hard and they're great leaders for us," GHS head coach Matt McComish said. "We're going to miss them next year, but we've still got a whole season in front of us with them to keep moving forward and I know they want to keep improving so we need to keep working hard."

Blaine Fenwick was the next senior to wrestle, at 220 pounds, and needed only 25 seconds to pin North Vermillion's Roy Storey.

Jordan Froderman added to the pin tally with a fall over Thomas Fuller before Greencastle picked up forfeit wins in three of the next four classes. The run was broken up only by Cameron Hinton's pin of Julian Wharton.

Matt Fultz scored the Falcon's second win by pinning Jordan Sanders before senior Nick Pingleton won a 9-0 majority decision over Matt Kingrey.

The Tiger Cubs picked up their fourth forfeit of the night, followed by senior Riley Boswell's technical fall win over Cody Jumps by a 16-1 tally.

Aaron Langdon lost his first match of the season as he was unable to better Wade Harrison in a 14-8 decision. The night was capped off by senior 170 pound No. 16 Carter Lewis winning by pin fall over David Kennedy.

McComish said that the seniors on show were exemplary in their performance on the night and for the season so far.

"Every practice, we're making improvements and we did look good tonight," McComish said. "We're still making some mistakes but we are getting better and we're going to have a big test of that on Saturday."

Greencastle will next face an immense step up in competition as the Tiger Cubs travel to Castle High School for a six-team tournament.

"We need to wrestle the best and while it's a long trip and a hard day of wrestling, we learn a lot from it and take a lot away from it," McComish said. "This year will not be any different."

The meet, which features No. 2 Evansville Mater Dei, No. 8 Bloomington South, No. 18 Jasper and formerly ranked Jeffersonville, along with the hosts, is the kind of test McComish wants his grapplers to have.

"We got in the meet three years ago and I knew it was going to be a test for us," McComish said. "Every kid has to wrestle his match and it will be a good check for us, to see where we are in our progression and to see where we want to be.

"We have wrestlers that can compete with those teams. We went there and got a win against Jasper last year, but we have to take it one match at a time."
