Girl Scout cookie sales under way locally through Jan. 27

Monday, January 7, 2013

It's that time of year again, time for Girl Scout cookie sales, which began on Sunday and will continue through Jan. 27.

Putnam County Girl Scouts have eight varieties of cookies to choose from: Thin Mints, Tagalongs, Trefoils, Do-Si-Dos, Samoas, Thank-U Berry Munch, Savannah Smiles and Dulce De Leche.

The cost is $3.50 per box.

Along with selling Girl Scout cookies to customers in their area, Scouts in Putnam County participate in Operation Cookie Drop, which allows customers to support military personnel by purchasing packages of cookies to be delivered to military troops throughout Central Indiana.

In 2012, approximately 6,000 cases of cookies were delivered to Camp Atterbury and other military locations throughout Central Indiana, including 60 National Guard armories, the Marines, the Air Force and the Army.

Cookies will arrive in Putnam County during the first week of February.

The Girl Scout cookies sold in Central Indiana are made by Little Brownie Bakers (part of Kellogg's) in Louisville.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest business run by girls in the country.

Much more than a fundraiser, it's a hands-on way for girls to develop five essential skills that are central to the Girl Scout Leadership Program: Goal-setting, decision-making, money management, people skills and business ethics.

Anyone who doesn't know a Girl Scout but would like to purchase cookies may contact Service Unit Manager Katrina Asher at 522-1571 (home) 376-5050 (cell) or via email at kasher@tds.net.
