Saturday, January 12, 2013

The Greencastle South Putnam boy's JV basketball squads locked horns Thursday night in a game that wasn't decide until the final two seconds of the second overtime.

Chase Chew banked in an off-balance three-pointer with 2.4 seconds to lift the young Tiger Cubs to a 38-37 victory.

Greencastle scored first in the contest and held an early lead, but SPHS answered and the two squads went toe-to-toe for 30 minutes with neither team leading by more than seven points the entire contest.

The Tiger Cubs led by three at the end of one, 14-11, but the Eagles fought back to take a 21-19 lead at the break.

Greencastle outscored SPHS 8-6 in the third stanza to knot the game at 27 going into the final quarter.

Neither team could get into a good rhythm in the fourth quarter, with both teams only garnering four points and a 31-31 tie.

The first overtime saw the Tiger Cubs and Eagles tied at 35 with less than a minute to play.

GHS coach Doug Hudson called a timeout with 15 seconds to go to set up a last-second play.

The Eagles defended the play well and a wild shot at the buzzer was wide, forcing another period.

The second overtime saw the Eagles take a one-point lead with less than a minute to play. The Tiger Cubs again worked for the last shot.

Hudson called a timeout with 15 seconds to go setting up an out-of-bounds play for a final shot.

The Eagles snuffed out the first option and the ball was kicked to Chew who put up a wild shot that found the bottom of the net.

The Eagles were unable to get a good look at the basket and Greencastle secured the win.

GHS's Luke Brotherton led all scorers with 13 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Jon Newgent chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds.

Jacob Schroer led the Eagles with 10 points.

Last Saturday, the Tiger Cubs defeated West Vigo by the same 38-37 score as Carl Basile hit a three-pointer with seven seconds to go.

In that contest, Brotherton again led all scorers with 16 and Basile added nine.

The Tiger Cubs (4-4, 2-0 WCC) will travel to Edgewood Saturday for a 6 p.m. contest.
