Greencastle Falls 59-16 to Danville

Friday, January 18, 2013

DANVILLE -- Thursday evening was the setting of a hard-fought match for the Greencastle High School wrestling team. It went toe-to-toe at Danville but ended up losing 59-16.

Greencastle and Danville had several matches that were very intense, each grappler fighting tough for each point and pin, including the 195-pound match that extended into four overtimes.

Sophomore Nate Tesmer (195) fought very hard to try to win his match against Danville's Matt Wolf but was eventually defeated in the fourth round of overtime when Wolf gained a point for escaping Tesmer's hold.

Senior Carter Lewis (170) won by majority decision, but was pushed for each point he earned against Danville's Matt Martin. Lewis had a total of four takedowns, two escapes and one near fall, while Martin had one takedown and one escape.

At 182, senior Hunter Smith pinned Danville's Trevor Kunkle with 14.2 seconds left in the third round of the match. Smith also had one takedown, one reversal and two near falls shutting out Kunkle.

Sophomore Cameron Hinton (120) was also pushed to the final round before he pinned Danville's Zach Stout with 54.3 seconds left in the match.

Hinton also had two takedowns, two near falls and a reversal while Stout had one escape, one reversal and one near fall.

Greencastle's loss can with two forfeits, in the 113 and 220 weight classes.

"Obviously when you lose 59-16, it's not a great night," GHS coach Matt McComish said, "but we had a few guys out and we've got a full week ahead of us before we wrestle at sectionals. We've got to keep looking at that and keep getting better."

As Greencastle prepares for the sectionals at Avon on Jan. 26, so do the rest of the schools in the county.

The Junior Varsity wrestled two matches against Danville. In the 145 weight class match, Greencastle junior Riley Jayne won by pinning Chris Genin at 57 seconds in the second round and in the 182 match, GHS junior Kendrich Collens was pinned by Brock Martin.
