GHS JV teams take two from Cadets

Saturday, January 19, 2013

The Greencastle girls' and boys' junior varsity basketball teams each picked up a win over Cascade on Thursday.

The girls' team beat the Cadets 32-20 and the boys' team won 44-40.

In the girls' game, Alison White provided a consistent scoring punch for the Tiger Cubs, netting a game-high 14. Sydney Smiley added eight to help key the victory.

Luke Brotherton scored 13 points to lead the boys' team, but he was joined double-figures by Calvin Hughes (12) and Carl Basile (11).

Jon Newgent hauled in 10 rebounds and added four steals and five blocked shots to anchor the defense.

Zack Wilkerson also received coach Doug Hudson's praise.

"Zack is a hard-nosed kid," Hudson said. "I like to call him my defensive specialist. If we need to ramp up the defensive pressure on an opponents' guards, Zack is always in the game.

"It is not always easy for a freshman to play JV, but Zack comes to practice every night ready to get after it and his defensive play is proof of his work ethic."

The boys' never trailed in the contest and held on for victory after taking an early 15-7 lead.

"I could sing the praises of every player that was on the court tonight as we competed well as a team," Hudson said. "I told them in the locker room that, if we continue to play as a unit and win close game, we are going to be hard to beat."
