Greencastle pulls away from Turkey Run

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

The Greencastle girls' basketball team started flat against Turkey Run on Saturday, but responded with a strong defensive effort in the second half to get a 51-23 win.

Junior Alex Basile and sophomore Callan Taylor each had nine points to lead the team.

"Callan Taylor had two big threes to get us rolling in the third quarter," GHS coach Bradley Key said. "We had a very well-rounded scoring game."

Nine players scored for the Tiger Cubs, including seven with four or more points.

Senior Jessi Covert finished with nine rebounds, including seven on the offensive end.

It was the team's other senior, Rayleigh Amis, that Key said woke the team up.

"(I'm) really happy with the first-half play of Rayleigh Amis," Key said. "Ray has come a long way and has really stood out as our leader this year."

Amis had eight points and seven rebounds.

Basile, the team's point guard, added an efficient five assist and zero turnovers.

Greencastle senior Rayleigh Amis attempts a three-point shot in a game earlier this year. Against Turkey Run on Saturday Amis scored eight points and led the team with her defensive effort. (Banner Graphic/GRANT WIEMAN)
