Covered Bridge Country Chorus

Some time around 1999 or 2000, three ladies from Greencastle who loved to sing were part of a women's barbershop chorus in Terre Haute. After singing with the Terre Haute chorus for several years, they decided to share their love of barbershop music with women here in Putnam County.

The question they faced was, could they find enough other ladies to sing barbershop-style music with them and start a new chorus?

After placing an announcement in the Banner Graphic and having just a few meetings, the answer was obvious to the three bold dreamers. There were many ladies in the area who though a barbershop chorus in Greencastle would be fun.

Following those meetings, in January 2003, Covered Bridge County Chorus had its beginnings.

Fast forward a year and a half and CBCC sang in its first barbershop contest, didn't fall off the stage and had pretty good scores.

Since that first contest in 2004, they have competed in eight more area contests and have qualified and competed at the Harmony Incorporated International contest for the past seven years.

CBCC has traveled as far north as St. John, New Brunswick, and as far south as Orlando, Fla., for the fun and love of singing.

In 2010, they were the Area 4 championship chorus. Area 4 covers a 15-state region.

CBCC has sung in all our local nursing homes as well as some in Indianapolis and Crawfordsville. They have had eight shows in the courthouse, entertained at Parkfest, sung at city functions, at the Indiana Statehouse and even the national anthem at a Colts game.

It isn't a bad resume for being only 10 years old. A big thank you goes to the three original dreamers, Kathy Custis, Roseanne Jensen and Holly Custis Becker.

To commemorate its decade of existence and celebrate Harmony Awareness Week, CBCC is inviting the community to a free concert, complete with birthday cake.

The chorus will perform at the Greencastle Presbyterian Church at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 11. The 30-minute performance will be followed by light refreshments.

The church is located at 653 S. CR 100 East (Round Barn Road).
