Nick Gilliam suffered a thumb injury in the middle of his senior football season at Greencastle, but he didn't it hold him back.

Gilliam returned in time for the postseason, led his undefeated team to the sectional final game and eventually earned All-County and honorable mention All-State honors.

Though he spent the previous summer in discussions to play quarterback at NCAA Division II schools, his recruitment calls began to dwindle after the injury.

Gilliam's injury turned out to be a blessing in disguise as he eventually settled on Siena Heights University, an NAIA school in Adrian, Mich.

"It's a new program, but they're on the rise," Gilliam said. "At every school they're going to try to be nice and be cool. There, I just fit in."

In their two seasons, the Saints have a 12-7 record (8-1 club season in 2011, 4-6 in 2012). Gilliam (6'3", 195) joins a recruiting class of more than 50 players this fall.

"Siena Heights picked up a steal in Nick," GHS coach Josh Buis said. "Nick's got everything you look for. He's definitely a student of the game."
