With the talent and work ethic that Greencastle senior Colleen Weatherford possess, a number of schools were in pursuit of her.

As a distance runner, Weatherford was able to outpace all but one. She recently committed to run on the cross country and track teams at Butler University.

"It's been a tradition in my family," Weatherford said. "Not necessarily for running, though."

Weatherford will follow many of her family members to the Indianapolis school. She plans to compete year-round while she pursues a degree in biology or physical therapy.

With cross country in the fall, indoor track in the winter, and outdoor track in the spring, Weatherford will keep plenty busy as she works toward her degree.

She's looking forward to the challenge, as she sites the promotion of education as one of Butler's selling points.

Weatherford has been racing since fifth grade. She began to get serious about running in college when she watched her brother, Andy, compete in the IHSAA state finals as a sophomore in 2005.

GHS coach Garry Anderson said Weather is built for success.

"There's been none tougher that I've been around," Anderson said. "She pushes herself, sometimes probably too hard ... She works hard and likes to achieve success. They're getting a good athlete."
