Richard "Dick" J. McCready

Richard "Dick" J. McCready, 92, of Cloverdale, formerly of Spencer, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2013 at Putnam County Hospital.

He was born in Indianapolis on April 15, 1920 to William Arthur and Martha Jane McCready.

He graduated from Howe Military in 1939 and went on to attend Butler College where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Dick was an Army veteran, serving during World War II. In Germany he was taken prisoner and also suffered the loss of his arm. He was later awarded two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, the Silver Star and the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters.

He later returned to Howe Military as a tactical officer. Dick then spent 35 years as an insurance adjuster.

He was a 32nd degree Mason, 25-year member of Pentalpha Blue Lodge, Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine, Shrine Club, Lions Club, Spencer American Legion, where he was a commander twice and a member of the Honor Guard, a Life Member of American Legion VFW, DAV, a member of the 40 & 8 Order of the Purple Heart and Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his daughter, Vicki (Joe) Silva of Cloverdale; granddaughters Melissa Maker and Brandi (Jay) Bruce; and great-grandchildren, Samantha, Alexis, Tommy and baby Jay.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Violet and a sister.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 3 at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer. Allan Lewis will officiate. Military graveside services will be provided by the Spencer American Legion and VFW. Friends may visit from 1-2 p.m. at the cemetery.
