Presenting the final four PCYDC dancing stars

Monday, April 1, 2013

Dancing with the Putnam County Stars is set for Saturday, April 6 at the DePauw University Indoor Tennis and Track Center. Local celebrities will go toe to toe and raise money for Putnam County Youth Development.

This is the third of three sets of biographies of the 2013 stars.

Dan McMurtry

Dan McMurtry

Dan McMurtry is the Roachdale Elementary School counselor.

He is single and enjoys showing quarter horses and running.

McMurtry agreed to participate in Dancing with the Putnam County Stars because the Putnam County Youth Development Commission is a great cause.

"I hope to have a good time and make new friendships," McMurtry said.

Dance experience:

None -- "Good luck to my partner."

Nancy Michael

Nancy Michael

Nancy Michael is the business development officer at First National Bank and a part-time hostess at Almost Home restaurant.

She is also two years removed from a political career that included terms as an Indiana State Representative, Greencastle Mayor, Putnam County Councilor and Putnam County Clerk.

Nancy is married to Steve (a 2011 contestant), and together they have two adult children, Peter and Mary.

Michael's hobbies include working outside in her yard or with her dad in the garden, listing to local bands and musicians, crochet and getting together with friends.

She is a member of the Greencastle Rotary Club, Greencastle Housing Authority Commission, United Way of Putnam County and the Putnam County 4-H Fair Parade Committee.

Michael said her former contestant husband played a part in her choosing to participate in the 2013 program.

"Steve did not talk me out of it," Michael said. "Instead he told me all the reasons I would enjoy it."

She added that the worthwhile cause and its energetic organizers helped convince her.

"It's a great cause and resource for kids and families," Michael said. "It was hard to say no again (2-3 times) to Linda Merkel and Patti Harmless."

The potential rewards of participation are pretty straightforward for Michael.

"To learn to dance," she said. "I have no understanding of dance steps and would love to feel more comfortable when the occasion arises."

Dance experience:

"Little to none -- only in my living room or when Steve plays with his bands locally."

Tanis Monday

Tanis Monday

Tanis Monday is the director of the Putnam County Museum.

She has one son who is six and in kindergarten at Ridpath Primary School.

Monday's hobbies include gardening, cooking, baking (not following recipes), reading, writing and possibly one new hobby.

"I think I'm going to take up dancing," she said.

She serves as the treasurer of the Greencastle Civic League and is also a member of Gobin United Methodist Church and the Greencastle Rotary Club.

Monday is dancing to have more community involvement, to meet people and to top it all off with a little fun.

"I thought it would be lots of fun, and PCYDC is a great cause," Monday said.

Dance experience:

Sixth-grade show choir, jazzercise and Zumba.

Randy Seipel

Randy Seipel

Randy Seipel is a 25-year veteran of the Greencastle Police Department, where he serves as a detective and captain.

He has one son, Jes, who is 21 years old and a Putnam County Jail officer. He also has two dogs, Shamus McGregor the Shih Tzu and Gretel the dachshund.

Seipel sings baritone in the Indianapolis Scottish Rite Men's Chorus and the Double Eagle Quartet. He also enjoys woodworking and is an expert mixologist.

He is currently serving as Most Wise Master Indianapolis Chapter of Rose Crois, Scottish Rite Indianapolis and is a member of Murat Shrine Dramatic Cast, Past Master Temple 47 Free and Accepted Masons, Past Patron Greencastle Order Eastern Star and Area Representative for Indiana Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons. He is also a member of the Putnam County Fraternal Order of Police and First Baptist Church, Greencastle.

Seipel agreed to participate in Dancing with the Putnam County Stars "because sometimes it's good to step out of your comfort zone and do new things and meet new people."

He hopes to make new friends, help raise money for PCYDC and learn to dance.

Dance experience:

"No formal dance experience but not afraid to shake it."
