Thursday, April 4, 2013

The Tri-M Music Honor Society, the international music honor society for secondary school students, has announced the chartering of a new chapter at Greencastle Middle School.

The new GMS chapter is under the sponsorship of school Music Director Kathryn Dory.

"The formation of this chapter signifies the school's recognition of the importance of the arts in the development of a comprehensive educational program," Dory said. "The Tri-M Music Honor Society provides a means of recognizing the efforts and achievements of music students who volunteer their time and share their musical talent with others."

GMS students inducted into Tri-M chapter 3540 on Wednesday, March 20 were President Ben Gellman, Vice President Alex Weliever, Secretary Corrine Buchanan, Treasurer Shelby Paxton, Historian Esther Hale and members Keegan Cavaness, Lauren Faulstich, Jace Featherston, Amy Gong, Madeline Graham, Kelly Hansen, Kate Hershberger, Susanna Howard, Kaitlin Kessler, Joshua Lamb, Maurice Long, Brittany Mulryan, Cecilia Pohlar, Nicholas Seaman, Gabrielle Selvia, Michaela Semak, Tristyn Sharpee, Lydia Trout, Madison Trout, Madison Woodall, and William Wren.

A recital by the students followed the induction ceremony for the enjoyment of parents and guests.

Since 1952, nearly 5,000 Tri-M chapters have been chartered in the United States, Canada and a number of other countries, with membership in the thousands.

Chief aims of the Tri-M Music Honor Society are to foster greater interest in band, orchestral and choral performance and to provide wider opportunities for personal musical expression.

Students are selected for membership in the society on the basis of musicianship, scholarship, character, cooperation, leadership and service to their school and community. The organization's standards serve to challenge students to greater effort and achievement and to encourage them in the pursuit of excellence.
