S. Putnam softball win-streak ends, Eagles rebound for tournament win

TERRE HAUTE --The South Putnam softball team saw its 58-game win streak come to an end on Friday night with a loss to Roncalli at the Terre Haute South Brave Bash, but the Eagles rebounded Saturday and swept three games to finish in first place in the Silver Division.

SPHS was ranked No. 1 in the preseason as two-time defending state champions.

The Eagles (5-1) had victories over Terre Haute South, North Central (Farmersburg) and Bedford North Lawrence by a combined score of 28-10. Friday's loss to Roncalli was 16-5 in five innings.

SPHS opened the Saturday schedule with a 13-5 win over Terre Haute South.

Sophomore Ashlee Gibson threw a complete game, striking out four. She also went four-for-four at the plate with one RBI and one run scored. Junior Kenzie Trisler had three hits, including two home runs, and four RBIs.

Senior Jenna Jones had four hits, including a double, three runs and three RBI and freshman Katie Hewitt had three hits, including her first home run. Senior Nikki York hit her first home run of the season.

The Eagles beat North Central in game two, 5-3. Senior Mattie Varvel pitched a complete game with five strikeouts. She also had a double and scored two runs. Trisler and Jones each added a home run.

In game three, SPHS beat Bedford North Lawrence 10-2.

Gibson struck out four in her complete-game effort. York was three-for-three at the plate with two doubles, Trisler had a double and triple and Hewitt hit her second home run.

In Friday's loss to Roncalli Gibson struck out two. Jones went three-for-three with two doubles.

Tournament totals for the Eagles include strong performances from:

Gibson -- 9-for-14, four RBIs;

Jones -- 11-for-16, six runs, seven RBIS, home run;

Kenzie Trisler -- 9-for-13, seven runs, five RBIs, three HRs and a triple;

Katie Hewitt -- 8-for-15, five runs, 11 RBIs, two HRs;

Nikki York -- 4-for-7, two RBI, 2 double, HR.

Junior Brooke Cundiff scored two runs, Varvel had five runs and a double and Janet Crafton had two runs, an RBI and a double.

South Putnam hadn't lost since April 2011, a streak that included the first ever undefeated title defense in Indiana history last season.

They'll play again Monday, hosting West Central Conference opponent Cascade at 5 p.m. Tuesday's game against the Cadets is at Cascade at 5 p.m.
