County Jail

The following two people were booked into the Putnam County Jail recently.

* At 11:40 p.m. Tuesday, Thomas L. Holzknecht, 72, Plainfield, was arrested for operating while intoxicated.

* At 12:10 a.m. Wednesday, David McCaslin, 49, Avon, was charged with probation violation.

Sheriff's Department

* At 2:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Roger A. Wright, 57, Coatesville, was backing his 2005 Ford Mustang out of a space on Franklin Street in Greencastle. He did not see the approaching 2004 Ford Ranger driven by Matthew J. Romalia, 29, Reelsville, and backed into it.

Capt. Danny Wallace estimated damage at $2,501-$5,000.

* At 7:05 p.m. Devon Z. Thrasher, 19, Coatesville, was eastbound on U.S. 36 in a 2013 Toyota Corolla S when he fell asleep. The car crossed the center line and entered a cornfield north of the road.

Thrasher told Deputy Kyle Gibbons that at this point he woke up and tried to regain control. The vehicle slid sideways through the field before getting entangled and overturning.

It came to rest on the driver's side door.

Thrasher emerged from the vehicle basically uninjured and refused medical treatment.

Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.

* At 2:39 a.m. Wednesday, Jesse P. Polston, 40, Spencer, was southbound on U.S. 231 at approximately 606 Main St., Cloverdale, when he fell asleep at the wheel.

Sgt. Craig Sibbitt reported that Polston's 2006 Ford left the west side of the road, became airborne and then hit a tree head on.

Polston suffered only facial abrasions.

Sibbitt was assisted in the investigation by Lt. Dwight Simmons.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

City Police

Two property-damage accidents were investigated recently by Greencastle City Police.

-- At 7:48 a.m. Wednesday, a two-car accident was reported at State Road 240 and Calbert Way.

Carla Hurtubise, 51, Greencastle, was westbound on State Road 240 and had stopped her 2013 Buick for the stoplight at Calbert Way, where it was struck from behind by a 2005 Buick driven by Randy D. Parrish, 48, Greencastle.

Parrish told Officer Darrel Bunten he was returning home from work in Plainfield and apparently dozed off at the wheel as his car approached the intersection.

Officer Bunten estimated total damage at $2,500-$5,000.

-- At 12:39 p.m. Tuesday, a two-vehicle mishap occurred on Indianapolis Road, 600 feet east of 10th Street.

Deanna Spurgeon, 40, Westfield, was westbound on Indianapolis Road, driving a 2003 Mitsubishi, when her car was struck by a 2006 Chrysler driven by Thomas A. Wilson, 62, Poland.

Wilson was exiting the parking lot in front of Dollar General to go west on Indianapolis Road and told Officer Jeff Modlin he did not see the Spurgeon car and pulled out, striking it in the driver's side.

Total damage was listed at $1,000-$2,500.

Four recent citations were issued by city officers.

-- At 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, Dianna Rightmyer, 44, Cloverdale, was ticketed at Washington and Market streets by Officer Matt Huffman for an infraction of driving with a suspended license.

-- At 11 p.m. Tuesday, Kara Campbell, 28, Newberry, was cited at Washington Street and Percy Julian Drive by Officer Huffman for driving with an expired license plate (March 14).

-- At 8:59 p.m. Tuesday, Tina Hornung, 39, Greencastle, was ticketed on Bloomington Street by Officer Nick Eastham for having a false or fictitious registration.

-- At 1 p.m. Sunday, Eric Robert Brenner, 24, Terre Haute, was stopped by Officer Bunten at Bloomington and Tennessee streets for alleged speeding. Given a warning for that infraction, he was cited for being an operator never licensed.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to three dispatches on Tuesday.

* At 1:15 p.m. GFD was called to a motor vehicle crash at Veterans Highway and Warren Drive. They oversaw cleanup on the roadway and of diesel fuel that spilled into the ditch. Crews returned to station at 3:48 p.m.

* At 2:07 p.m. firefighters investigated a brush fire at 496 S. CR 100 East. They found that the fire was not being tended and advised the residents to monitor it. They cleared the scene at 2:45 p.m.

* At 6:04 p.m. fire personnel investigated an alarm at 106 Spring St. They found it was due to cooking and returned to station at 6:14 p.m.
