Putnam Purdue Club dinner to feature Boiler assistant April 23

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

Micah Shrewsberry, an assistant basketball coach at Purdue University and a former DePauw University assistant, will be the featured speaker at a dinner program sponsored by the Purdue Club of Putnam County on Tuesday, April 23.

The 6:30 p.m. dinner program at Autumn Glen in Greencastle is open to the public.

Shrewsberry, a graduate of Indianapolis Cathedral High School and Hanover College (1999), is in his second season at Purdue, having joined the staff in April 2011.

While at Hanover, he was a three-year starting guard and during his senior year led the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in free throw shooting (.833) and assists (4.4 per game). He also holds a master's degree in sports management from Indiana State University.

During his two seasons at Purdue, Shrewsberry has been integral in lowering the rate of turnovers. The Boilermakers averaged just 8.74 turnovers per game as a team in his first season, the sixth-lowest in the NCAA since the organization began tracking the statistic in 1993.

Shrewsberry came to Purdue after four years at Butler University where he started as coordinator of basketball operations in 2007 and was promoted to assistant coach in 2008.

During his tenure at Butler he coached in the NCAA Final Four tournament in 2010 and 2011. He also aided in the development of Shelvin Mack, who finished his Butler career regarded as the best point guard in the school's history. Under Shrewsberry's tutelage, Mack scored more than 1,500 points and handed out nearly 400 assists in three seasons.

While at DePauw University form 2001-03, Shrewsberry helped the Tigers to a 42-12 record and a pair of conference championships under head coach Bill Fenlon.

Shrewsberry's coaching career has also included stints at the University of Indianapolis (1999), Wabash College (2000-2001), Marshall University (2003-2005), and head coach at Indiana University-South Bend (2005-07).

Purdue Club President Ron Birt invites the public to the dinner and program, stating "This is an excellent opportunity to get an inside view of Indiana college basketball from an experienced coach."

Cost of the dinner is $20 per person. Reservations can be made by calling Sandy Williams (653-3523) or Marianne Ash (386-7554).
