ROACHDALE -- The North Putnam varsity baseball team jumped out to a three-run lead over the Covenant Christian Warriors on Saturday, but the visitors had the last word as they beat NPHS 9-4.

Senior Jake Haste (3-1) got the loss for NPHS. He went 4.0 innings and gave up five runs on four hits and struck out two.

The Cougars took the lead in the first after manufacturing a few runs. Senior Brody Perrine led the inning off with a single. After Michael Herrmann walked, Kyler Badten advanced them both with a sacrifice bunt.

Haste then hit an RBI-single to score Perrine and junior Kaleb Belcher followed with an RBI-single of his own.

NPHS (6-1-1) added one more small-ball run in the third. Badten reached base on an error, then advanced on a base hit by Haste.

Badten stole third base, then scored on the same play after the ball was misplayed by the catcher.

The Cougars' pitchers were behind in the count all day, which put the Warriors into an advantage at the plate.

Covenant Christian scratched four across in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Junior Beau Green came in to relieve Haste. He allowed four runs on six hits in 2.0 innings.

Jordan Nauert pitched a scoreless seventh.

Badten contributed to the Cougars' final run in the fifth. His sac-fly scored Perrine after he'd doubled earlier in the inning.

Belcher had two hits and Green had a single.

The Cougars are scheduled to host South Putnam on Monday at 5 p.m., then travel to the Eagles' field on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

A make-up game with Cloverdale, previously rained out last Tuesday, has been scheduled for Thursday at North Putnam at 5 p.m.
