Clovers top field at three-team meet

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

The Cloverdale boys' golf team used its home course to its advantage on Monday, beating visitors Tri-West and South Putnam 176-199-199.

Rylan Mattocks and Chase Snyder of Cloverdale and Derek Chestnut of South Putnam each tied for the lowest score of the day with 43s.

"Rylan and Chase both played much better rounds," Cloverdale coach Doug Wokoun said. "They managed to avoid trouble and big numbers. They both took a big step in the right direction."

Other Cloverdale scorers included Kylar Galloway's 44, Aaron Whitlock's 46, Freddy Fislar's 49 and Devin Bassett's 55.

South Putnam's scorers were Justin Berry (46), Chad Menke (53), Jimmy Rutter (57), Austin Query (57) and Steven Wilson (70).

"Freddy and Aaron both ran into some difficulties, although they played parts of the round very well," Wokoun said. "Kylar gave us a real boost and can be very important for us if he can establish some consistency. Devin struggled a little after a decent effort on Saturday and we need to get more consistency from his as well."

"South Putnam is a young team and showed some flashes of being a sound golf team," Wokoun continued. "Derek Chestnut is a very good player, but had a little bit of an off day. Coach (Brian) McClure is doing a very good job and I think as his team matures, they will become a good group."

Cloverdale (5-4) travels to Rolling Meadows on Thursday to play Owen Valley, Sullivan and White River Valley.
