COVINGTON -- The North Putnam boys' golf team took a road trip to Covington on Monday to play for the first time ever at River Crest Country Club.

The Cougars had beginners' skill as they came away with a win, shooting 177 to beat out Covington's 185 and Fountain Central's 195.

Although Fountain Central was the host school for the night, the meet was held in Covington.

NPHS coach Linda Patrick stated that it was a new course for the team and hoped that the players would just have fun at a new course. Having being given some pointers on how to play the holes, the team seemed rather calm starting the meet.

"They knew there were some tough holes but most players were able to take advantage of the pointers and come through most holes unscathed," Patrick said.

NPHS junior Mason Asher, medalist for North Putnam, decided to just hit irons for the meet as he had been having difficulty with his driver. His decision definitely panned out for him with his score of a 39.

Danny Smith managed to only have 16 putts for the night and carded a solid 45. Jake Smith, making six fairway hits for the night, shot a 46.

Bennett Hazelgrove and Austin Judy both carded 47s. Jon Willard, struggling with putts for the night, shot a 48.

"Both Ben and Austin, new to the team this year, are becoming pivotal scorers for the Cougars as the season progresses," Patrick said.

Fountain Central's C. Hoagland was medalist for the meet with a 38.

"Once again it is just a matter of getting all the players to shoot good the same night," Patrick said. "Players with putting problems one night will turn around and have driving problems the next, and vice versa. The lack of range play has been detrimental for working on long iron shots.

"So far most bunkers at the meets have been water filled or muddy, so bunker hits have pretty much been non-existent for the time being. We haven't played a meet yet with playing the ball down.

"We are coming up to the county tourney next week and hopefully we can get a dry spell to help the courses get to solid playing conditions."

The Cougars have an intra-county showdown with Greencastle at Windy Hill on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
