In honor of joining the Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce, Scobee Meats hosted a ribbon cutting on Thursday, May 2. Owners Jane and Tim Scobee shared the event with employees and chamber members. Present for the event were (front, from left) Nikki Hutcheson of Hickory Creek at Sunset; Scobee employee Robert Stamper, owners Jane and Tim Scobee; employees Tish Roberts, Cory Barrett and Cindy Parker; (back) city councilor Jinsie Bingham; Kent Sullivan of Eitel's Florist; Amy Trusty of PNC Bank; and Chamber Executive Director Tammy Amor.

Although the business started in 2009, Scobee Meats recently celebrated a ribbon cutting when it joined the Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce.

The Scobees opened their doors on Sept. 1, 2009 when they became a deer check-in station for the state as well as offering deer processing.

On March 15, 2010, the business was inspected by the state to do custom butchering for local farmers. They began butchering hogs and lambs before adding beef the following year after modifications to the shop and pens to accommodate larger animals.

On Feb. 20 of this year, the shop was inspected by the state and county to open a retail meat case. Currently, the business purchases boxed meat from suppliers and cuts fresh steaks, roats, fresh ground hamburger, fresh ground sausage, bacon and chicken and is adding new items weekly.

The Scobees also make maple syrup from the trees on their farm. It is pure, with no additives. They cook it with wood and hang buckets and bags from trees to collect the sap.

While they enjoy making syrup the old-fashioned way, they do use four-wheelers to transport the sap to their tanks.

It is a lot of hard work, but the end product is well worth it.

In the future, the Scobees hope to be inspected again by the state so they will be able to buy local animals from Putnam County farmers and sell the meat in the retail case.

The shop is located at 264 E. CR 350 North, which is about one mile east of Brick Chapel. For more information, call 653-7119.
