Cloverdale boys track comes from behind for county win

The Cloverdale boys' track and field team trailed South Putnam entering the final event of the 2013 Putnam County Meet on Tuesday, the 4x400 relay.

To win the county title, the Clovers needed to finish first.

Junior Wade Warren ran a masterful anchor leg for Cloverdale's team of junior Mike McCullough, junior Bret Brumfield and sophomore Jake Waycott to edge out an event win and the Eagles finished third, giving the Clovers the 73 total points it needed for the win.

South Putnam finished second with 72.5, followed by Greencastle's 58.5 and North Putnam's 40.

A meet that close depends on more than just one race. In addition to the 4x400, the Clovers won five total events, including two by Warren, the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.

Senior Jourdan Smith won the 1600 and Brumfield won the 400.

Beyond the event wins, though, was the depth. The Clovers picked up points in several other key events to help scoot up the standings.

South Putnam actually won more events than Cloverdale -- seven total -- but they didn't grab enough points from second- and third-place finishes to secure the win.

Senior Ryan Chestnut set a county meet record in the shot put. He put his shot 50-feet, 2-inches to break the previous mark of 49-11. Chestnut also won the discus.

Junior Derrick Mitchell won the long jump, senior Trent Workman won the pole vault, junior Klayton Vittetow won the high jump and junior Hunter Barr won the 800.

SPHS also won the 4x100 relay with a team of Wes Riner, Ben Fiest, Lucas Lorian and Mitchell.

The Eagles failed to enter a 4x800 team in the meet. A third-place finish in that event would have given SPHS enough points to win the meet.

North Putnam, which finished fourth, had event wins from sprinter Tucker Lowe. The sophomore swept the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

The Cougars also got second-place finishes in the long jump (Nick Kaufman), shot put (Eric Davis) and 4x100.

Greencastle's event wins were sophomore Taylor Secrest in the 3200-meter run and the 4x800 relay.

Secrest also finished second in the 1600. Also finishing second were Bryce Hudson in the 800, Elijah Brattain in the 400, Dylan Battin in the 110 and 300 hurdles, Grant Mundy in the discus and the 4x400 relay team.

The four teams will compete again on Friday at the West Central Conference meet, also hosted by South Putnam.

The WCC meet begins at 5 p.m.
