Greencastle boys secure second straight WCC win
The Greencastle boys' track and field team won the 2013 West Central Conference meet on Friday, scoring 119.5 points to beat out host South Putnam.
The Eagles, with 105, finished second. Cloverdale (85), Monrovia (73), Cascade (70.5) and North Putnam (40) rounded out the field.
Greencastle's team win came with just three event wins, but the strong squad picked up numerous top-threes to pile up points and propel itself to victory.
The Tiger Cubs won both the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.
The 4x4 team of Sedrick Weinschenk, Elijah Brattain, Jacob Kessler and Tyler Hudson finished at 3:40.08, two seconds ahead of second-place Cloverdale.
The 4x8 team of Taylor Secrest, Isaac Harms, Brattain and Hudson finished at 8:42.14, more than 11 seconds ahead of second-place SPHS.
Sophomore Anthony Mitchell got the only individual win for the Tiger Cubs, securing first place in the high jump at 5-10. Mitchell, who stands about 5-foot-8, failed in his three attempts at the next height, but still defeated Cloverdale junior Wade Warren because of fewer scratches.
Warren won both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles for Cloverdale, the team's only event victories. Warren also won both events at Tuesday's Putnam County meet.
South Putnam won five total events, the most of any team, but fell just short in the team score.
Eagles' freshman Joey Masters pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the night, winning the discus with a toss of 125 feet.
Senior Ryan Chestnut won the shot put at 51-1, junior Ben Fiest won the 200-meter dash at 24.17 and junior Hunter Barr won the 800 at 2:05.15.
South Putnam's 4x100 relay team of Wes Riner, Fiest, Lucas Lorian and Derrick Mitchell also pulled of a win, finishing at 46.01 seconds.
North Putnam's team had one event win. Junior Nick Kaufman fearlessly ran down the rain-soaked long jump ramp and soared to a distance of 18-10.
The competition was delayed for about 15 minutes due to rain and several competitors performed cautiously.
The locals teams will compete again next Thursday at sectionals.
