DANVILLE -- The North Putnam boys golf team snuck past visiting South Putnam on Tuesday 186-197.

Cougars' coach Linda Patrick said she expected a stronger performance from the team, given the near-perfect weather conditions and the time of the season.

"Many of the players were making common rookie mistakes that generally show up in the beginning of a golf season and players were not totally concentrating on their shots," she said. "Each player knows their own abilities and each player knew they were not performing well, which led to several mental breakdowns."

South Putnam sophomore Derek Chestnut was the medalist at the match, shooting a road season-low 38.

Austin Judy was the low man for the Cougars, shooting a 45.

Judy came back from a tough start to par three of the final five holes.

Junior Mason Asher shot a 46 for North Putnam, tying him with Ben Hazelgrove. Danny Smith shot a 49, Jon Willard a 50 and Jake Holtze a 50 for NPHS.

"Ben Hazelgrove had a very consistent 'Ben' round," Patrick said. "Jake had a really good round going for him but his last hole killed it when he had to take a four-over."

The Cougars travel to Deer Creek on Thursday to take on Cascade at 4:30 p.m.

South Putnam hosts Clay City on Tuesday.
