The South Putnam softball team battled back to tie the score with three runs in the bottom of the seventh against Terre Haute North on Thursday, but it still came out one run short of a win.

The Eagles lost 6-5 in eight innings.

Junior Brooke Cundiff led the Eagles with three of the team's 12 hits, but three errors proved too costly to overcome.

It was South Putnam's third-straight loss, dropping its season record to 14-7.

Junior Kenzie Trisler, senior Kelsey Whitaker and sophomore Ashlee Gibson each had two hits for the Eagles.

Gibson also threw a complete game, striking out two and allowing 10 hits and four walks.

The Eagles fell behind 4-1 after the top of the third inning and didn't put together a sustained rally until the bottom of the seventh.

SPHS put three runs across before the inning was over, tying the game against THN pitcher Allison Crick, but the momentum was halted in the top of the eighth.

The Patriots got one run off Gibson to take the lead, then stopped bottom of the Eagles' order from doing the same.

It was South Putnam's final regular-season game before sectional begin on Tuesday against Cloverdale.

The Eagles and Clovers play at Cascade High School at 5:30 p.m.
