MARTINSVILLE --The youthful Cloverdale golf team has hit a rough patch in its season. The Clovers have struggled all week and the challenges continued Thursday in a loss at Martinsville, 192-179.

Aaron Whitlock was the Clovers' best scorer, shooting a 44 at the nine-hole event.

"This was a difficult match in many ways," Cloverdale coach Doug Wokoun said. "Our inexperience and youth really betrayed us for the first time this season. Aaron is our most experienced player and his score reflected his ability to adapt to the circumstances.

"He felt he could have done some things better, but he outplayed most of the opposition on their own course by using his experience."

The only Artesians golfer to beat Whitlock's score was Baylor Bryne, who finished at 40.

"Martinsville did not have a good night and there were several points at which I thought we would seize an opportunity and get control of things," Wokoun said. "Just the opposite happened and I am convinced that we haven't had enough match experience with this group to capitalize when these opportunities present themselves."

The remaining Cloverdale scorers were Freddy Fislar (47), Rylan Mattocks (50), Chase Snyder (51), Devin Bassett (53) and Kylar Galloway (60).

"We did some good things, but our play, particularly around some very highly-maintained greens, was lacking," Wokoun said. "We have a number of things to improve, but this is a very young group and I am confident we will take care of these issues as we go forward."

Cloverdale (11-7) is next scheduled to play White River Valley and Terre Haute South at Phil Harris on May 29.
