Five-run third dooms Eagles against Mustangs

JD Briones

Senior JD Briones threw six solid innings and homered against Edgewood on Thursday, but the effort wasn't enough as South Putnam lost 8-5.

SPHS (3-18, 2-8) scored two runs in the second to tie the game but a five-run third inning helped settle the score.

Trailing 2-0, Wyatt lined a one-out base hit to get the Eagles' rally started. Briones followed two batters later, driving a home run into the softball field to tie the score.

The momentum stopped for South Putnam in the next half inning. The first seven batters reached base for Edgewood on three hits, three walks and a fielder's choice before the Eagles got out of the inning.

Both teams added one more run going into the bottom of the seventh. Senior Justin Bumgardner scored one more run for the Eagles but the small rally wasn't enough.

Freshman Grady McHugh and senior Aaron Parker each had hits for SPHS.

Braxston Lucas finished the game for the Eagles.

South Putnam plays its next game against Covenant Christian on Wednesday at the Speedway Sectional, beginning at about 7:30 p.m.
