Rounding out the four candidates for the 2013 Banner Graphic Teacher of the Year award, Kacey Seaver has been named the Teacher of the Month for May.

The first grade teacher at Greencastle's Ridpath Primary School was nominated for the May award by Amy Howard, who not only had a son in Seaver's class this year, but is also a fellow teacher.

"Mrs. Seaver deserves the recognition of May Teacher of the Month for many reasons," the Greencastle Middle School teacher wrote. "She has inspired my son to love writing this year. She pushes him to new heights each day with his reading and math skills."

Howard added Seaver's accessibility and sensitivity to the attributes she admired.

"Mrs. Seaver is always available to answer any questions I may have about my son's education," Howard said. "Above all, Mrs. Seaver has played a vital role in my son's ability to deal with a terrible loss this year. She has helped my son cope with his grief and I am ever grateful."

Seaver said she found out she had won from husband Mike, whom she credited with being her biggest cheerleader and promoter.

"I said if I ran for president, he could be my campaign manager," Seaver said.

After receiving her $50 gift card from Banner Graphic General Manager Daryl Taylor, Seaver said she would put it to good use in her classroom.

"I don't know what I'll do, but it will be something for in my room, something fun for the kids," Seaver said.

After claiming the May award, Seaver will be in the running to get something a lot more fun for the classroom. The winner of the Teacher of the Year will receive a $500 grand prize, sponsored by First National Bank.

The winning teacher's school will also receive a $500 grand prize grant, sponsored by the Putnam County Community Foundation. The teacher will designate the program within the school that the grant will benefit.

The Teacher of the Month contest began in February, so Seaver is one of four Putnam County teachers eligible for the award.

* February: Katina Wetter, Cloverdale Elementary School

* March: Patricia Schreiber, Bainbridge Elementary School

* April: Jennifer Riggle, Deer Meadow Primary School

* May: Kacey Seaver, Ridpath Primary School

The voting period for Teacher of the Year opened today and will continue through Saturday, June 15. Voting is available by clicking on the Teacher of the Year graphic at www.bannergraphic.com.
