A day in the life of a police officer

Participants in the 2013 Greencastle Police Department Boot Camp got to take a closer look at what it means to be a police officer this past week. Among the activies were being introduced to the SWAT Team by the Indiana State Police and scuba diving with the DNR. Dylan Scott (top, left) got to take a look down the scope of a sniper rifle with SWAT Team officer Brandon Trinkle. Earlier in the day Josh Derringer was able to talk to a DNR diver who was underwater through a headset with the help of DNR officer Patrick Labhart.

The fourth annual Greencastle Police Department Boot Camp took place this week. Children entering grades 6-7 participated in daily activities, which included raising of the flag, physical training and more.

Throughout the week students are able to be a part of several activities to including team building exercises, taser demo, diving with DNR, shooting range activities and listening to several guest speakers, such as Mayor Murray, ISP SWAT Officer Jim Hayes, Prosecutor Tim Bookwalter and US Army MP Soldiers.

This program was made possible with the support of the Putnam County Prosecutor's Office, Indiana Excise Police, Indiana State Police, Putnam County Fraternal Order of the Police, Air Evac, Putnam County Jail, Putnam County Sheriff's Department, Greencastle Parks and the Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources.

The Greencastle Police Department would also like to thank Pizza King, Putnam Inn, Greencastle McDonald's, VFW Men's Auxiliary, Walmart, Kroger and Dixie Chopper for providing lunch every day for the kids.

Boot Camp instructors this year included Chief Tom Sutherlin, Excise Officer Corporal Jerrod Baugh, Excise Officer Dawn Townsley, Detective Michael Collins, Officer Darrel Bunten, Excise Officer Sgt. John Copeland and US Army Soldier SGT. Ivan Croy.
