Bainbridge to start improvements

Monday, June 17, 2013

The sidewalks in Bainbridge will be improving in the next few weeks. At Wednesday's meeting, the Bainbridge Town Council discussed the Safe Schools grant the town received.

The $250,000 grant will help to build sidewalk routes to Bainbridge Elementary School. This will allow children a path that does not have them in traffic.

Another sidewalk issue was also addressed by the council, concerning the repair of sidewalks in front of businesses. The council will be letting the businesses know that the property line for the business extends to the sidewalk and all repairs are the responsibility of the business.

Along with sidewalk issues, street assessments have been done. It was decided that the streets were in decent enough shape that repairs could wait for another year.

There was also discussion of partnering with GIS to have aerial photos be taken to help future town workers know the layout of the city's utilities and such.

Council member Chuck McElwee observed that the town would be in trouble if utility manger Troy Elless left his post or fellow councilman Joel Thompson died.

GIS will be doing a presentation of what is possible with the taking of the photos at the next Utility Board meeting.

McElwee also brought up the need to fix how the water drains off of the roof of the community center. He pointed out that how it was draining now could become a serious hazard during the winter and how it has already eaten away at the parking lot for the center. Elless was to start on this project as soon as possible.

The next Bainbridge Town Council meeting will be held on July 10 at 7 p.m.

In other business:

- Denver McMurphy will be holding his usual fireworks display in Bainbridge and has asked the town council and the Bainbridge Improvement Society (BIS) for help putting on this display for the town. The council will be seeing if BIS will be helping and will be helping if BIS does not.

- Town Clerk-Treasurer Jason Hartman was asked to look into the next steps of annexing property into the town for utility purposes. More information will be available in coming issues of the Banner Graphic.

- Travis Smith was denied his request to close off several streets in town for a fourth of July block party.
