U.S. Postal Service worker struck by SUV
A Greencastle U.S. Postal Service worker was injured Wednesday afternoon when she was struck by a car while crossing North Jackson Street.
At 3:39 p.m., the Greencastle Police Department responded to the accident, which occurred on North Jackson Street near New York Street.
Investigating Officer Sgt. Terry Eastham stated that the driver, Rebecca Hedge, 34, Greencastle, was heading west on New York Street, attempting to turn south on Jackson Street in a 2005 Ford SUV.
Jane Briones, 49, Greencastle, was walking across the street during her regular mail delivery route when she was struck by the driver's side front of the SUV. That resulted in Briones being knocked to the ground, causing injuries to her head and neck.
It is unknown what may have caused Hedge to not see Briones, police said. Briones was transferred via Operation Life to Putnam County Hospital, where she was then immediately airlifted to Methodist Hospital.
Eastham stated that Briones was conscious at the scene and was aware of her surroundings. He went on to explain that it was likely Briones was transferred to Methodist Hospital due to the nature of the head and neck injuries from the accident.
"It was more precautionary than life-threatening," Eastham said.
Assisting the Greencastle Police Department were the Putnam County Sheriff's Department, Greencastle Fire Department and Operation Life.
