Ron Paul

Three-time presidential candidate and former congressman Ron Paul will visit the DePauw University campus on Tuesday, Sept.10 to deliver a Timothy and Sharon Ubben Lecture, "Our Lives, Your Liberty and America's Future."

The speech will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium, located within DePauw's Green Center for the Performing Arts (605 S. College Ave.). As with all Ubben Lectures, the event is presented free of admission charge and the public is invited.

Among the issues Paul will address in his Ubben Lecture is this summer's disclosure that the U.S. National Security Agency has been operating a clandestine mass electronic surveillance data mining program since 2007.

"The government does not need to know more about what we are doing" Paul has stressed.

"There is but one special interest that we should be working for, and that would solve just about all of our problems, and that is our liberty." Paul has said.

"Thomas Jefferson lives. He's Ron Paul," presidential biographer and author Doug Wead declared recently.

Paul has remained a consistent voice for limited constitutional government, low taxes, free markets and a return to sound monetary policies based on commodity-backed currency.

Known among his colleagues in Congress and his constituents for a consistent voting record in the House of Representatives, Paul says he has never voted for legislation unless the proposed measure was expressly authorized by the Constitution.

In September 2011, Time magazine's Alex Altman wrote that Paul "has a coherent worldview: That individual liberty is the highest American ideal and a free-market economy its foundation. Paper money is a mirage predicated on trust in a government that can't be trusted. Fealty to the Constitution means accepting the parts of it you might not like, whether it's your neighbor's right to shoot heroin or gamble away his paycheck. 'You can take your life and be very productive, or you can be destructive,'' Paul says, 'but you can't meddle in other people's lives.'"

Born in a suburb of Pittsburgh in 1935, Dr. Paul is a graduate of Gettysburg College and the Duke University School of Medicine. He served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force from 1963-68, and then worked as an obstetrician-gynecologist from the 1960s to the 1980s, delivering more than 4,000 babies.

Paul served three terms covering 23 years in the U.S. House of Representatives (1976-77, 1979-85 and 1997-2013) and became the first congressman in history to serve concurrently with a child in the Senate when his son Rand Paul was elected to the U.S. Senate from Kentucky in 2010. He was the Libertarian Party candidate for president and sought the Republican nomination for the White House in 2008 and 2012.

In almost every survey and straw poll, Paul draws big numbers from voters between the ages of 18 and 29.

As Salon reported in 2011, "Paul, of course, is one of the only presidential candidates in contemporary American history in either party to overtly question our nation's invade-bomb-and-occupy first, ask-questions later doctrine and to admit what the Central Intelligence Agency acknowledges: namely, that our military actions can result in anti-Americanism fervor and terrorist blowback."

As Paul told ABC News in 2011, "Young people are more open to consistency and principle."

Paul is the author of several books, including "Challenge to Liberty," "The Case for Gold" and "A Republic, If You Can Keep It."

He has received many awards and honors during his career in Congress, from organizations such as the National Taxpayers Union, Citizens Against Government Waste and the Council for a Competitive Economy.

And as announced earlier this month, the new Ron Paul Channel will launch later this summer.

Established in 1986 through the generous support of 1958 DePauw graduates Timothy H. and Sharon Williams Ubben, the Ubben Lecture Series was designed to "bring the world to Greencastle."

Previous Ubben Lecturers have included Mikhail Gorbachev, Margaret Thatcher, Benazir Bhutto, Tony Blair, Jane Goodall, Ross Perot, Shimon Peres, Elie Wiesel, Gen. Colin Powell, John Major, Barbara Bush, Spike Lee, Mike Krzyzewski, Mitch Albom, Peyton Manning, Gen. Wesley Clark, George Will, Bob Woodward, Willy Brandt, Karl Rove, Howard Dean, Ralph Nader, Harry Belafonte, Carl Bernstein, Todd Rundgren, Jane Pauley, Bill Bradley, Julian Bond and many others.

  • Dear "smartmom,"

"Lets brainwash some more depauw students. Really Depauw?" --- your comment in your post

Really, "smartmom"? I don't think that you are "smart" at all, and perhaps that you are even a "mom." Otherwise, you would know that "Lets" has an apostrophe in it (between the "t" and the "s"), and you would also know that Dr. Ron Paul, M.D., former 12-term U.S. Congressman who represented the great State of Texas, speaks the Truth, at all times. I think that the only "brainwashing" going on here, is what you have allowed the "MainStream Media," and all of the criminals in our outrageously unconstitutional, utterly redundant, and completely unneeded, 17 trillion dollar in debt Federal government, to do to you, "smartmom."

  • Brainwash...

What a word! What a word indeed, to use with such a response to the arrival of one of the greatest speakers for freedom and justice in our history. What an amazing man Ron Paul is. He is the only politician whose words and actions are 100% in line with each other, and one of the only politicians that cannot be bought for any amount of bribe or money...

Brainwash? The only brainwashing is happening through the Mainstream media. While CNN creates Blue Screen fake videos about the world we witness, people's minds rot in a cesspool of bought and paid for news which has no basis in reality.

We're on the brink of World War 3, the dollar is completely finished as a currency for the world financial scene, and Ron Paul speaks the truth about these things.

Meanwhile, we have criminal government entities who should have been jailed long ago attempting to wage fake false flag wars with the intent of creating this 3rd world war, and the media pretends like this BS war wasn't planned for at least the last decade, as General Wesley Clark detailed days after 9/11 when his superiors said that we are basically going after every single country that was nationalized in the middle east (including Syria), and not operating on the global central banking model, or attempting to trade in gold backed currencies of their own.

Not to mention the strategic location and oil reserves and pipeline routes.

And now, same plan, different president, with every lie he told to get elected, there are still people that believe the Republican/Democrat difference of opinion.

Wake up people, the president is arming and helping Al Queda fight, and bringing nothing but suffering to the people of Syria. The evidence is all pointing toward the REBELS aka Al Queda using the Chemical Weapons.

Haven't we all heard this story before?

The message that Ron Paul has to share is one of Freedom. That may be scary to some of you that cannot imagine a world of true freedom, lucky for you, there are visionaries like Ron Paul to show you the way.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink!!!
