Sheriff's Department

* At 9:36 p.m. on Tuesday, Vinay Kamlakar Nickanth, 48, Dove Canyon, Calif., was westbound on State Road 240 in a 2013 Ford Fusion, when his vehicle made front-end impact with a 2013 Chevrolet 3500 truck, which is owned by Randall K. Spronk, 53, Pipestone, Minn.

Spronk was traveling eastbound on State Road 240 at the time of the collision.

Both drivers told Deputy Kyle Gibbons that as they crested a small hill on State Road 240 they collided.

Nickanth suffered an injury to his left shoulder as a result of the accident and was transported to Putnam County Hospital via Operation Life ambulance.

Both drivers cited the width of the roadway and a "glare" as possible contributors in the accident.

Damage was estimated in excess of $50,000.

City Police

Five recent traffic accidents were investigated by Greencastle City Police officers.

-- At 6:12 p.m. Monday, a two-vehicle accident was reported on State Road 240 East after an unknown man standing along the roadway caused William Richardson, 36, Putnamville, to stop his 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee when he thought the man was going to walk into the eastbound lane in front of his vehicle.

As he stopped suddenly, Richardson was struck from behind by a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse, driven by Ashley Wombles, 21, Greencastle.

Total damage was estimated at $1,000-$2,500 by Officer Matt Huffman.

The pedestrian reportedly got back in this vehicle and left the scene.

-- At 2:26 p.m. Monday, the intersection of College Avenue and Franklin Street was the scene of a two-car accident.

A 1994 Buick Skylark, driven by Shirley Heichel, 61, Cloverdale, and a 2002 Ford Mustang, driven by Rene Lehr, 23, Greencastle, collided in the intersection, Officer Jeff Modlin reported.

Heichel had reportedly stopped westbound at the stopsign, saw Lehr southbound on College with the right of way but thought she had time to cross the roadway. She did not, however, and pulled into the path of the Mustang and was struck in the passenger's side.

Total damage was estimated at $1,000-$2,500.

-- At 3:59 p.m. July 27, a two-vehicle mishap was reported on South Jackson Street at the railroad tracks south of Greencastle.

Preston Lady, 17, Greencastle, was southbound on Jackson Street, driving a 2002 Ford F-150 pickup and told police he apparently dozed off at the wheel as he approached the area where the pavement jogs to the west.

The teenager's truck struck a northbound 1992 Ford F-150, driven by Jeffrey Gross, 55, Greencastle, nearly head-on, Capt. Mike Hanlon reported.

Total damage in the accident was listed in excess of $10,000.

-- At 11:10 a.m. July 27, a two-vehicle accident was reported on the west side of the courthouse square as the farmers' market was taking place Saturday morning.

Donald Collette, 49, Bainbridge, was southbound on Jackson Street, driving a 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor, when he was forced to stop for a vehicle in front of him. That driver apparently couldn't make up his mind whether or not to turn left onto Franklin Street.

When Collette was forced to stop a second time, his vehicle was struck from behind by a 2007 Mazda, driven by Maurice Dean, 45, Greencastle.

Capt. Hanlon, who was assisted at the scene by Officer Ed Wilson, estimated total damage at $2,500-$5,000.
