Spencer gets Indiana area's latest Village Post Office

Thursday, August 15, 2013

SPENCER -- The Owen County seat of Spencer has achieved a number of notable distinctions since the town was founded in 1820.

Named for soldier George Spencer who died at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811, Spencer is the birthplace of the mother of former British Prime Minister Harold McMillan and recently passed Indianapolis as the Indiana town with the most married couples with children per capita.

On Friday, Aug. 16, Spencer will make its mark once more when the 49th Village Post Office (VPO) in the Greater Indiana District opens at the Junction Mart, 4517 Estes Rd.

The Junction Mart is open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The new postal center will be officially opened by Bloomington Postmaster Rick Minton and other USPS. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 1 p.m. with an open house from 1-2 p.m.

In 2011, the Postal Service introduced the VPO model as an alternate retail location for postal products and services, especially in rural communities.

VPOs are operated by local businesses contracting with the Postal Service, and offer a range of popular postal products and services including stamps and flat-rate packaging.

The Postal Service will open its 50th VPO in the Greater Indiana District at the Follett Purdue Book Store in West Lafayette on Aug. 20.
