Greencastle cross country teams get wins at West Vigo

Wednesday, August 21, 2013

The Greencastle boys' and girls' cross country teams opened their seasons with a win on Tuesday. The Tiger Cub boys outran host West Vigo and picked up a 25-33 victory. The girls' team won 15-45.

Taylor Secrest led the GHS boys team, finishing in second place overall with a time of 19:04. Clayton Wilson followed at 19:17.

"We did a good job for being a young team in today's heat," GHS coach Garry Anderson said. "The performance from the freshmen was surprising. Both teams still have a lot of work to do, especially in closing the gap between our second and fifth runners."

Vikings runner Jonah Eckert won the event at 17:49.

In the girls race GHS sophomore Corrie Romer came in first. Her finish at 23:08 beat out junior Brittany Love by just five seconds. The Tiger Cubs swept the top six spots in the race.

"The girls surprised a lot of people today, mainly themselves," Anderson said. "Yes, we lost two very good runners from last year, however Corrie and Brittany are having no problem stepping up to take their place."

Greencastle's next meet is Saturday at Fountain Central at 9 a.m.
