ROACHDALE -- The North Putnam girls' soccer team came out slow but kept a steady effort on its way to a 3-0 win against visiting South Vermillion on Tuesday.

The Cougars got a pair of goals from Laurel MacGregor and one from Kaelynn Abner.

"The girls played phenomenal tonight," NPHS coach William Gaskins said. "The first half was a little rough getting those first-game jitters out. We came out the second half much better. I can't say enough about the young squad that came out tonight and the captains that led them."

Megan Plessinger and Rebecca Booth each notched an assist in the win. North Putnam had several runs at the net but just four shots on goal.

The Cougars' next game comes Thursday when the squad hosts rival Greencastle at 5 p.m.
