Tiger Cubs out of sync at Southmont

CRAWFORDSVILLE -- The Greencastle volleyball team jumped out to an early lead in each set but failed to keep its rhythm, losing 3-0 at Southmont on Tuesday.

The Tiger Cubs lack of consistency gave the Mounties wins at 25-13, 25-18 and 25-21.

"We just need to find all of hitters on the same night," GHS coach Maggie Walters said. "We have some girls hitting well in one game, and then in the next game they're not hitting well."

Greencastle started the match strong, jumping out to 4-0 lead in game one. Junior Taylor Stoltey, scoring three of those points, paced the Tiger Cubs as a server and setter. She had 18 assists in the match and GHS's first three points.

The lead quickly slipped away and the Mounties moved to a 14-8 advantage behind the serves of seniors Kayla Morris and Tayler Spurr.

Walters mixed up her lineup to start game two, but inconsistent play continued as the Tiger Cubs searched for combinations that would work for both defense and offense.

Junior Olivia Divine had four of her team-high nine kills in the second set and all three of her team-high service aces, but GHS still couldn't find traction.

By game three Greencastle was still searching for a way to prolong their early-set success, mixing in a variety of players, and meeting mixed results.

Senior Danielle Thomas came in and gave the Tiger Cubs four straight points, including a pair of aces that expanded their lead to 8-4, but Southmont kept the pressure on.

Greencastle's defense improved in the final set, key by blocks from sophomore Allison White and junior Jessica Lenihan and GHS held the lead until Korbin Myers served the Mounties out of the deficit at 14-14.

Lenihan and junior Quinci Miller finished second on the team with four kills each. Miller, Stoltey, junior Kennedy Downing and junior Brittany Welker all had one ace.

The Tiger Cubs (0-3) have another game on Wednesday when they host Sullivan at 7:30 p.m.
