James C. "Pete" Sheldon, 79, of Greencastle, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013.

He was born Aug.18, 1934 in Jasper County, Ind., to James Jacob Sheldon and Ruth Audrey Hendrixson Sheldon.

Jim was a graduate of Remington High School, and received his bachelor of science degree in animal husbandry from Purdue University.

He served his country in the Indiana National Guard.

Jim was a member of the Putnamville United Methodist Church.

He was very active in his community through 4-H, agriculture and served 19 years as the Washington Township trustee.

A longtime farmer in Putnam County, Jim served as 4-H leader of the Reelsville Plow Boys (RPB's) for 42 years, served on the Putnam County Extension Board and Fair Board, was superintendent of the Swine Barn for seven years and was co-superintendent of the Fairgrounds Community Building for more than 30 years.

He received the FFA Blue and Gold Award from South Putnam FFA, was an Honorary FFA Chapter Farmer, was a Putnam County Friend of the Extension, and was the Putnam County Ag Hall of Fame Friend of the Farmer in 1997.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Sheldon; and two brothers-in-law, Ralph Hutchinson and John Smith.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Patricia S. "Pat" Sheldon; two sons, Ernest J. Sheldon and wife Christina L. Sheldon of Reelsville and Edward J. Sheldon and wife Stephanie A. of Roachdale; a sister, Patricia Hutchinson of Kentland; an aunt, Kate DeWees of Rensselaer; three sisters-in-law, Alice Sheldon of Remington, Maryanne England and husband Dan of Lafayette and Barbara Lawson and husband Ed of Wolcott; four grandchildren, Valerie Haddon and husband Justin, Kristi Kennedy and husband Matthew, Trevor Sheldon, and Brant Sheldon; one great-grandson, Parker Haddon; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2 at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Pastor Tim Matthews officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, Sept. 1 from 1-6 p.m.. at the funeral home.
