LAFAYETTE -- The Greencastle boys' and girls' cross country teams both finished in fourth place in the Maverick Stampede, hosted by McCutcheon High School on Saturday.

Leading the boys' squad were freshmen Clayton Wilson, Cameron Lewis, Jacob Crawley and Braden Pershing, GHS coach Garry Anderson said.

"Wilson gave the upperclassmen a wakeup call," he said. "This was the first race of the season where neither (Elijah) Brattain nor (Taylor) Secrest was the top finisher. This is the start of an interesting season. We are interested to see how the upperclassmen will respond."

Secrest finished in 13th place overall, one spot and seven seconds behind Wilson in a time of 18:46. Brattain finished 18th at 19:08, third on the Tiger Cubs. Levi Lewis finished at 20:21 in 32nd place.

In the girls' race sophomore Corrie Romer once again had the best finish for GHS. Her time of 23:29 put her in 10th place overall. She was followed closely by junior Brittany Love (23:39, 12th) and Samantha Haynes (15th, 24:09).

"Although we did not accomplish the fifth-year-in-a-row win with the girls, it was rewarding to place fourth in the boy and girl races," Anderson said. "Corrie, Brittany and Sammi did a great job of staying as a pack.

"The seniors need to start racing before they, too, get a wake up call from the underclassmen, much like the boys' team."

Greencastle competes again Saturday at Terre Haute North at 9 a.m.
