James W. Phipps

James W. Phipps, 69, of Greencastle, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013.

Born Nov. 13, 1943 in Bloomington, he was the son of Homer and Estella (Cole) Phipps and was a 1961 graduate of Van Buren High School. He continued his education, graduating from DePauw and Indiana universities.

James had taught social studies and Spanish at Southwest Park and Cloverdale high schools. He had also taught at Ivy Tech Community College.

He later opened a law practice in Greencastle, where he served as an attorney for several years.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy and a member of the American Legion, very active in their Hoosier Boys State Program.

Survivors include his wife Sandra K. (Jackson) Phipps; daughters Julia Dickinson and Audrie Grimes; brothers Michael and Norman Phipps; and two granddaughters, Emma and Anna.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A gathering of friends and family will take place from 4-6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home.
